The 1947 All-Star Game

We're just a few days away from this season's All Star game, but this season's game won't be played at Wrigley Field.

It's only been played there three times. 1990, 1962, and 1947.

The 1947 game is today's Tale from a Bad Century.

Curt Simmons

Today's Tale from a Bad Century is about Curt Simmons; a truly great pitcher that was no longer great by the time the Cubs got him.

Read his story here.

Bench Jockeys

In the 1920s and 1930s the Cubs were known as the biggest bench jockeys in the league.

What is a bench jockey? It's a player or manager who sits on the bench during the game and taunts the opposing team. The Cubs were so bad that the Commissioner had to step in to get them to stop it.

That story is today's Tale from a Bad Century.

It was a tradition at Wrigley Field for 60 years. Friday was Ladies Day, and today's Tales from a Bad Century tells all about that great tradition.

You can read it here.

The 1907 World Series

That was a brutal loss for the Cubs last night, and it's becoming obvious that we can once again say that immortal phrase: "Wait til next year." This week's Tale from a Bad Century goes back to a year they didn't need to say that.

Read all about the 1907 World Series.

Jimmy Cooney

Today's Tale from a Bad Century is about the rarest of baseball plays. It happened to Cubs shortstop Jimmy Cooney this week in 1927, and then didn't happen again in the National League for another 65 years.

You can read it here.

The All-Traded Team

Today at Just One Bad Century we go through Cubs history to name the "All-Traded Team". These are the best players (by position) traded away by the Cubs.

I just read it again this morning and got a little verklempt.

Johnny Evers Breaks Down

Exactly 100 years ago today, Cubs Hall of Fame second baseman Johnny Evers suffered a nervous breakdown after a very stressful year off-the-field.

It was the beginning of the end of the Cubs dynasty, and it's today's Tale from a Bad Century.

Jack Quinlan

This week's Tale from a Bad Century leaves the playing field and goes into the broadcast booth to tell the story of Cubs radio announcer Jack Quinlan.

A great announcer taken away from us at a very young age.

Joe Niekro

He had a great career, won more than 200 games, and the Cubs had him first.

You can guess the rest. The tale of Joe Niekro is today's Tale from a Bad Century.

Sammy Goes Sour

Today's tale is about the end of our love affair with Sammy Sosa. (Sniff, sniff) "How could you have cheated on us like that?"

(I'm trying to fill the void left by ABC's canceled soap operas)

The Wrigley Basket

This morning's Tale from a Bad Century is about the reason the Cubs installed the basket on the outfield walls. Contrary to ESPN's Joe Morgan's assertions, it wasn't installed to give Ernie Banks cheap home runs.

The real story is here.

Cubs Poetry

This week's Tale from a Bad Century takes a slightly classier road. Ahem. Please enjoy this Cubs Poetry.

Inspired by two of the three Hall of Famers in this picture.
